Campbell County is hoping that the federal government will declare it a drought disaster area so that farmers whose crops were affected by dry weather can receive low-interest loans to help them.

According to a news release from the governor's office, Gov. Mark Warner is seeking declarations for 21 localities throughout the state. Fauquier County is the only locality that has received the declaration, according to the news release.

Scott Reiter, extension agent for Campbell County, said it could take four to eight weeks before the county finds out if the state will comply with the county's request.

The lack of rainfall in August and September significantly impacted hay and pasture crops because those crops normally depend on receiving rain during those months. That will affect cattle and livestock farmers the most, since those crops are used to feed the animals.
