Kinghorn is one of 1,076 students who will graduate this fall from the University of Phoenix, which held its commencement ceremony Saturday at Glendale Arena.

Kinghorn said a television commercial for the college inspired her to pick up the phone. She told her story to the academic counselor, who encouraged her to study human services.

To fund her education, the single mother took out student loans and worked odd jobs to pay the bills. Her ex-husband provided her with spousal and child support.
