Crucial regulations for B.C.'s payday loan industry will once again be delayed if the government makes good on its plan to cancel the fall sitting of the legislature.

"We need the federal legislation passed first in any event," Les said. "Once they have tabled their legislation, we will then be able to start work on ours, which we could then present in the spring session of the legislature."

But Michael Thompson, president of the Canadian Payday Loan Association that represents almost two-thirds of the country's payday lenders, says he's disappointed by B.C.'s decision to wait for the feds to act first.

"If you wait for federal action, then that just means you're delaying your own regulation by a significant period of time," said Thompson, whose group has been asking to be regulated.
