Les Baugh, Leslie Morgan and Lorraine Jankowitz have carried fundraising advantages into their respective fall runoff campaigns for Shasta County supervisor, assessor-recorder and auditor-controller.

Baugh had raised $27,268 to fellow Anderson City Council member Norma Comnick's $15,630 in the race for District 5 supervisor, according to the latest financial statements on file with the county elections office.

Morgan, an auditor-appraiser, had pulled together $27,857 to Deputy Assessor-Recorder Gary Estep's $12,249 in the contest for assessor-recorder, and audit supervisor Jankowitz gathered $33,442 to Assistant Auditor-Controller Connie Regnell's $23,257 in the campaign for assessor-recorder.

The numbers reflect campaign activity between Jan. 1 and June 30 -- ending only a few days after ballot counting showed the six hopefuls emerging from primaries. Baugh, Morgan and Jankowitz were runners-up in their respective primaries, but leaders Comnick, Estep and Regnell failed to avoid runoff elections because they didn't receive more than half the vote.

The fundraising totals include monetary and nonmonetary contributions as well as loans taken out by the candidates. Jankowitz took out $31,000 in loans, while Regnell borrowed $11,000, Morgan $10,000, Estep $4,721 and Comnick $4,000.

Baugh spent $27,001, ending the first half of the year with a cash balance of $890, according to his disclosure statement. Comnick spent $14,988 to finish the primary with $642. Among the listed expenditures were radio ads and fliers for Comnick, and campaign brochures and yard signs for Baugh.

Morgan spent $28,537 to Estep's $11,408, and she finished the period with $3,168 to his $95. Jankowitz spent $27,367 to Regnell's $18,313, and she ended the period with $6,075 to Regnell's $5,219.

Candidates had until the end of July to submit their statements. The next statements are due Oct. 5 for the period ending Sept. 30, and then Oct. 26 for activity through Oct. 21. Large contributions after Oct. 26 must be reported immediately.
