BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - China's broad M2 measure of money supply rose 17.9 pct year-on-year at the end of August, slowing on a month-on-month basis, the central bank confirmed.
The central bank also said in a statement posted on its website that the narrower M1 measure of money supply was up 15.6 pct year-on-year at end August, compared to 15.36 at end-July.
The figures are in line with those leaked earlier to banking sources, and come after government officials said money supply growth had slowed last month.
But despite the month-on-month increase, the central bank said that lending is now being brought under control, noting in its statement that last month's new loans total was 2.2 bln yuan less than a year earlier.
